Running a growing business means making decisions every day. You are focused on winning clients, managing cash flow, delivering work and keeping your team moving.
HR structures can easily fall down the priority list.

But as your business grows, informal ways of managing people can start creating problems. You may have employees without clear job descriptions, inconsistent onboarding, incomplete employee records, unclear leave processes or managers handling employee issues differently.
These may seem like small issues at first. Over time, they can affect productivity, employee experience, compliance and even your ability to scale.
So, where should an SME start?
You do not need a large HR department or complicated systems to put good HR practices in place. Start with the basics.
Here are a few areas every growing business should review:
1. Employment documentation
Do your employees have the right contracts and relevant employment documents? Are employee records complete and properly maintained?
2. Roles and responsibilities
Does every employee understand what they are responsible for and what is expected of them?
3. Onboarding
Do new employees receive a structured introduction to the business, their role, policies and the people they will work with?
4. Leave and attendance
Are leave, attendance and working arrangements being managed consistently and documented properly?
5. Performance management
Do employees know what they are working towards? Are managers having regular conversations about performance rather than waiting until the end of the year?
6. Policies and procedures
Do you have the basic policies and procedures your business needs, and do your employees know where to find them?
7. Employee relations and compliance
When an employee issue arises, do you have a consistent and fair process for handling it?
These are not only HR issues. They affect how your business operates.
A business can have great products, strong sales and ambitious growth plans, but if its people practices are not keeping up, the gaps will eventually show.
Use the checklist to see where you stand
We have created a practical HR checklist to help SME owners and managers review some of the key people practices in their business.
Use it as a quick self-assessment. Identify what you already have in place, what needs attention and where you may need additional support.
Get the full HR Checklist, send us an email to training@paulacreations.co.ke with the subject line: “HR Checklist” and we will send you the complete checklist for your own use.
If you identify gaps, you do not have to fix everything at once. Start with the areas that carry the greatest risk or have the biggest impact on your people and business, then build from there.

When you are running a growing business, putting HR structures, processes and tools in place can easily feel like something to deal with later. There are clients to serve, sales to close and everyday business challenges to handle.
However, good businesses understand that their people and how work is organised are part of the foundation for growth.
The checklist we have shared gives SMEs practical structures and tools they can start using immediately. You do not need a large HR department to start putting good HR practices in place. You need to get the basics right and apply them consistently.
Think about a bank, hospital, professional services firm or any business that you trust. The level of professionalism you experience does not happen by chance. There are people, processes and systems working behind the scenes to make sure the business delivers.
SMEs can apply the same principle at their own level. Start with the basics, put clear structures in place and improve them as the business grows. You can manage some of these areas yourself, and as the business becomes more complex, you can bring in an HR Officer or an HR partner to support you.
The goal is not to create HR processes just for the sake of having them. It is about making sure your people understand what is expected of them, managers have the tools they need to manage their teams, and the business has a good foundation to grow.
Start where you are. Get the basics right. Build from there.
